H1B and Green Card Frequently Asked Questions
My H1B was approved; What do I do next?
Once a student is approved for an H1B visa, their status will automatically change to H1B without them having to do anything. Students should send a copy of their H1B approval notice to GEO at iadvisor@unm.edu so that GEO can update their status.
If I received a green card do I still have to report my employer for OPT/ STEM OPT?
Once a student is approved for permanent residency (green card), they no longer need to meet requirements for their prior status (F1 or J1). Their status will automatically change to permanent resident without them having to do anything. Students should send a copy of their green card to GEO at iadvisor@unm.edu so that GEO can confirm that it has changed and update their status.
If I receive a green card, does my tuition rate change from non-resident to resident?
Not necessarily, it depends on several other factors. UNM’s Registrar’s office can provide students with the list of criteria to know whether they meet in-state tuition requirements or not.
